- Watford_General_Hospital abstract "Watford General Hospital is a 521-bed acute District General Hospital in Watford, Hertfordshire, operated by West Hertfordshire Hospitals NHS Trust along with Hemel Hempstead General Hospital in Hemel Hempstead and the St Albans City Hospital in St Albans. It was formed at the foundation of the National Health Service of the buildings which were formerly the Watford Workhouse (from 1929, Shrodells Public Assistance Institution).WGH also incorporates the former Peace Memorial Hospital, the services of which were transferred to the Shrodells site from 1965 to 1985 when the Peace Memorial site shut down. The former Peace Memorial site is now the Peace Hospice. Singer Geri Halliwell was born there in 1972. Outline planning permission to redevelop the hospital and create the Watford Health Campus was granted in 2008. Section 106 agreements which will provide £3 million for infrastructure around the Vicarage Road site, including education and transport, were signed on 26 March 2010. In August 2012 Kier Property was selected to build the development. It will take 15 to 20 years to complete. The hospital is served by buses 10, 320 and 322 to Watford town centre and other places. A new road will be built to connect the hospital to the M1. A new tube station, to be called Watford Vicarage Road, will be provided nearby on the Croxley Rail Link of the Metropolitan line." external.
